Bubbles and Veggies and Pies, Oh My!

The last two Saturdays of the Attleboro Farmers Market season are fast upon us. The highlights are an Apple Pie Baking Contest, Spectacular Bubbles and a Pumpkin Carving Contest featuring the freshest produce and hippest locally made baked items and products.

It’s our First, hopefully annual, Apple Pie Baking Contest this Saturday, October 19 at the Attleboro Farmers Market, 732 Park Street, Route 118, at Finberg Field between Sturdy Memorial Hospital and LaSallete Shrine.

Find your best recipe, get making, get baking and bring your Apple Pie creation to the Market before 10 a.m. read the rules below. Memorize them if you must.

The ribbons are ready, see right. First, Second, Third Place ribbons for the best apple pies.

Back by Popular Demand, Party Bubbles

Party BubblesParty Bubbles will be back at the Market this Saturday. Make some spectacular bubbles with Megan Colby Parker, World  Record holder for the largest free floating bubble.

Flu clinic

Jacquie O’Brien, RN, from the Attleboro Health Department, will be conducting a flu clinic at the Attleboro Farmers Market from 10:30 to 11:30. The clinics are open to any individual 6 months and older. Both Flu “shots” and a limited amount of Flu “mist” will be available. Individuals are requested to bring all insurance cards. Individuals without insurance or whose insurance does not cover flu vaccine will still be able to receive their flu vaccine. Any one receiving the flu vaccine for the first time must stay for observation for 10-15 minutes. To help clinic staff, please wear loose clothing or short sleeves to provide easy access to your upper arm.

Pumpkins!

The Hebron Food Pantry will be selling pumpkins grown and donated by Farmers Market vendor Bob Peasely’s Breezy Knoll Farm. These pumpkins were grown from the same seeds we handed out at the Memorial Day Parade way back in May. All proceeds go to the Hebron Food Pantry. Carve that pumpkin during the week and enter it in next week’s Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Chalk fun

Make a donation of food item or money to the Hebron Food Pantry and have a Chalk Caricature or a Chalk-A-Doodle done by David Laferriere. David is a member of the Attleboro Farmers Market and the Attleboro Arts Museum boards of trustees. He is also the Dad who has been drawing on this kids’ sandwich bags since May of 2008.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Bring your carved pumpkins for our Third Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Carve up your best wicked cool, or spooky, or humorous, or cool-spooky-humorous Pumpkin. Get creative and get carving! 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and a Kiddo prize too! All you need to do is to bring your carved creation to the Market before 10 a.m. to register it. Judging will be at High Noon!

More chalk fun

David Laferriere will be back doing a Chalk Caricature or a Chalk-A-Doodle for a $5 donation to the Attleboro Arts Museum. David is a member of the Attleboro Farmers Market and the Attleboro Arts Museum boards of trustees. He is also the Dad who has been drawing on this kids’ sandwich bags since May of 2008.

Attleboro Farmers Market Apple Pie Baking Contest Rules:

  1. The apple pie baking contest is open to anyone wishing to bake an APPLE PIE. There is no entrance fee, however a small donation to the food pantry would be greatly appreciated!
  2. All pies must be homemade and baked from scratch, including crust.
  3. Only double-crust apple pies will be accepted. No crumbles, crisps, Betty’s or Pan Dowdy’s allowed. Official pie contest judge’s ruling as to eligibility will be final.
  4. Pies MUST be checked in by 10:00 a.m. on contest day (October 19, 2013)
  5. Apples used in pies must be locally grown (within 100 mile radius).
  6. No other fruits may be added (juices OK).
  7. Pies may not contain any type of nut.
  8. Pies that need special handling, refrigeration or heating elements are not allowed.
  9. The finished pie cannot contain raw/uncooked eggs
  10. We recommend that pies are baked in disposable pans only, as we cannot guarantee that pans will be returned to the pie’s baker.
  11. Pies will be scored on Appearance, Crust, Filling and Overall Flavor/Taste.
  12. The 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners will receive a ribbon and a certificate, AND bragging rights until next year!
